It's a diva: Looks flashy, costs a lot, but incredibly needy August 2, 2010 T. Farlow (Idaho USA) Like others have said, it's a comfortable handle, the weight is great, the head scrapes well (although it's a bit thicker in the middle, making for a bit of trouble getting everything off it in one swipe), and the razor-thin edge gets every last bit of whatever it is you're scraping. And it really is a sweet-looking design.
But that razor-thin edge has to be babied or you'll chip bits off. I did it once while mixing scotcheroos (~rice crispies treats), and routinely by sticking it in the dishwasher. I emailed Tovolo and got a brand new head to replace that one...which I then also proceeded to chip by just nicking the blade in my food processor.
In the end, it feels overpriced. Cool idea, but I can't be fussing over a spatula this much. Try the Rubbermaid Professional 13 1/2" Heat Resistant Scraper with the red handle if you want to pay a lot for a spatula, but one that stands up to normal use much better.
Started out great, now decomposing! August 1, 2010 Alan (San Diego) I agree with some of the other reviewers. I bought this based on the CI recommendation. It initially is nice, with the right level of firmness and shape to the blade, but after a few months, pieces of the silicone start breaking off in little chunks on the edges. Not cool. It now looks like a rat attacked my spatula for lunch. It has only been handwashed. Find another spatula unless you want to replace this one every few months.
Way too heavy June 23, 2010 Mike (NYC) I use spatulas as levers, sometimes to move heavy amounts of dough, etc, and also when I'm doing something that requires fine control. This spatula is the heaviest I've ever used - uncomfortably so. I'm surprised that it receives such high ratings.
Terrible! May 24, 2010 J. Pelka Like other reviewers, I bought this spatula upon a recommendation from Cooks Illustrated. I also was very happy with it initially. It has a nice handle and scrapes well but after a few months of use (never in high temperatures), pieces started chipping off. Very quickly several more pieces came off and I threw it out! I used it almost exclusively for batters and doughs and always hand-washed it. It's garbage. Don't waste your money...
The Best Rubber Policeman March 11, 2010 N. J. L. Macassey (Santa Barbara, California) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you make desserts, bake, or create sauces, you need something to get the last bits out of a bowl or saucepan. You can use your finger which is ineeficient v=but does have the bonus of giving youi a chance to lick a delicious sauce off it. Traditionally the tool to use is a rubber spatula. They are made of white rubber and do tend to deteriorate over time. As these rubber spatulas "gather all the evidence", they are often known as "rubber Policemen".
Now the rubber policeman is being made redundant. The tool to use in its place is a silicon spatula. It has several advantages. A sharper edge making it better at scraping off the last of a sauce. Better heat resistance, handy when making candy or caramels.. Longer life, less deterioration with use. Finally, the silicone is smooth with no pores to trap food making it easy to clean.
Of the several silicone enhanced rubber policemen, the Tovolo seems to be the best. It comes in several colours, handy if you want some for different tasks that you wouldn't want to confuse. Such as one for soap making and one for gravy and sauce.
