Uggh! April 23, 2009 icebear (Maine) Did Salton even test this thing before they started selling it?
I followed the directions and it sprayed starchy water all over my kitchen.
its in the trash now, still steaming....so am i.
No need to hover over stove, but has cons April 3, 2009 KLOH (Northern VA) I've owned this model for 12 years and like it sometimes. I used it for making white rice for years and it came out great w/o mess. It still always had burnt rice on the bottom, but I would soak with just a little water and give to our dogs.
We lost the rubber vent gasket on top about 4 years ago, so I switched to T-fal stovetop pot. Also, switched to brown rice, and I think you need a little more water than the cooker calls for. I can cook brown rice PERFECTLY on my stovetop. Then my stovetop pot got warped somehow so needed to use rice cooker again, but in my opinion the brown rice doesn't taste as good as on the stovetop. Water now spews out the lid and I use a baby washcloth over top of the steam hole which prevents only some of the stuff spewing. Still a mess to cleanup vs. stovetop. BUT, you can "fix it and forget it"...simply put in your measured rice & water, set it to "Cook" and plug into a household timer to start cooking right before you get home. That's the only reason I'm keeping it. Also don't know where to get the rubber gasket part online. UGH!

I got this rice cooker from TD Bank for free. I checked the quality. It's little bit better compare Walgreens' Gourmet Kitchen. It's not non-stick. It's simple, not elegant design. So, if you buy this for $37, try Walgreens for fraction the price.
Not Good April 3, 2008 Peter Dykhuis (Grandville, MI USA) I used this to replace a rice cooker that was given to my wife and I years ago. The original unit was inexpensive and used a loose unattached lid just like this one. That cooker allowed for easy unmonitored cooking of the rice and it came out perfect every time and could sit for an hour without burning.
This unit is a totally different story. I found that the device needed more water then the directions indicated. I found the rice burned or stuck to the bottom if it was not stirred. The opening of the item to stir screwed up the timing of the cooking so you never knew when it would be done. The rice was usually too dry or too sticky. Not good at all.
I threw this away and spend just a few dollars more on a unit from Aroma that is sealed with an attached lid. Trust me. Spend a bit more. I am so happy now but not with this unit. This unit was so bad that I would not even give it away it really belongs in the trash. You would be better off just using the stove and a pot then this poorly designed and poorly functioning device.
I am rating two stars rather then one as it did cook the rice even if poorly. I also want to give it just a bit of credit as it sounds like although others are not happy with the unit I may have had the worst experience which leaves me to believe that my unit may have been sub par.
