4 out of 5 stars A bachelor's best friend   October 3, 2009

Ya if you live in a small little space without the benefit of a complete kitchen this little guy will do every thing you need. It's durable and gets hot quick. Unlike those solid burner kind that take for ever to heat up and stay hot for a long time after. And since I live in the desert unnecessary heat is not a good thing.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Burner !   June 10, 2009
Research Maven (Miami, FL)
I don't understand why this burner didn't get a 5 star review. I have been "extremely happy" with it. The dial settings are accurate, and when working with the "high" setting, the heating element stays on instead of cycling on and off like another burner that I recently purchased. Most pans also cover the heating element completely, so that if there are any over spills from an accidental overboil, it does not make the burner have an electric short, like the other burner that I mentioned.
A++. Great value.

1 out of 5 stars Ground Wire Burned - Toxic Burning Smell   February 16, 2009

Toastmaster Basic Burner Buffet Range (single burner) version 2, 4/05.

I purchased this product 1.5 months ago. It worked fine. I would not be writing this review had it not defected. I used it about every night for 45 minutes for about 45 days in a row. Around day 30 I started noticing some foul smell during use. It was pretty foul, not the typical 'burnt toast' smell, but more of a 'paint on the burner' smell. I thought perhaps I had some invisible food residue on the burners. I gave the burners a cleaning (the lid does not open up very far for easy cleaning as advertised). Upon next use the smell returned. I couldn't figure out the source of the smell. I figured it was the burnt crisps on the bottom of the pan which I could not clean because the coils were in the way. (I never used chemicals to clean the burner/pan/coil). Well now, the burner stopped working during the middle of one boiling beans session. I opened up the pan by unscrewing the one screw. I found the source of the smell and the reason why the burner stopped working.

The reason is:
The electrical ground wire, insulation, flame retardant sheath, and connector clip (where it connects to the adjuster) was mere charcoal. That smell i was smelling was the toxic off-gassing of burning chemicals. The only thing left at the burn site was the flame retardant sheathing. Also, flame retardent chemicals are some of the most toxic bio-accumulating chemicals on the planet (eg. asbestos). It is sad enough these toxins were in the air and entering my lungs, but my food was sitting right on top of the off-gassing mechanism.

What in the world Toastmaster? Seriously, what happened?

I guess cancer is what you get when you play with fire (cook your food), back to raw food diet for me. Karma.

when this eventually stops working you have to take it apart an reconnect the wires on the inside so it will again

It's a good product. It heats up fast. It's easy to use. It takes up little space on the counter. Fine for a small frying pan.
