Amazon.com Review
Coffee drinkers have their automatic brewers, why shouldn't tea drinkers? Ideal for family gatherings or summer picnics, this ingenious Hamilton Beach machine brews up a pitcher full of iced tea in less than ten minutes. After the pitcher is filled with ice cubes, tea (either loose or bags) is placed in the special paperless filter, and an adjustment for mild, medium, or strong brewing is selected. The lid snaps on. A receptacle slides out from underneath the heating unit which then holds the pitcher snugly in place. Water is added to the heating unit, the power button pushed, and the hot water drips through the tea filter into the pitcher of ice. When brewing is complete, the power automatically shuts off for safety. Complete directions for use are embossed on the slide-out receptacle, which eliminates worries about losing a user guide. Although the iced tea maker looks bulky when assembled, the pitcher inverts snugly over the heating unit for compact storage. Able to fit in most refrigerator doors, the 2-quart pitcher features a hollow, comfortable handle and a thumb release for the lid, but is not dishwasher-safe. Assembled, the machine measures 17-1/2 by 11-1/2 by 4-1/2 inches. --Ann Bieri

5 out of 5 stars Hamilton Beach ice tea maker   August 30, 2010

Got the strength adjustment right on the second try. No problems so far. Sure beats anything I've tried before. If it breaks, I'll have to get another one just like it.

5 out of 5 stars best tea maker so far   August 10, 2010
tks
love the tea maker, easy to use and unlike the last one a newer Mr. Coffee, doesn't spew tea all over countertop.

I ordered this item to make sweet tea for my husband, a native Southerner. It was highly recommended by someone online. Only problem: I couldn't figure out how everyone else was adding the sugar. If you add the sugar to the ice before brewing, it gets cold and doesn't disolve. You can't add the sugar to the top portion where the teabags are, can you? We use substitute sugars anyway, but none of them mixed well with the tea. I started adding as much water as I could to make more tea, leaving out the ice cubes. When it is done, I add the sweetner, then the ice cubes - either to the pitcher or to our individual glasses. But it's not as user friendly as I thought it might be. I think there's got to be a better way to make 'easy tea'.

5 out of 5 stars Consistency is the key!!!   July 31, 2010

In order to make excellent tea you must first learn to make consistent tea. If it varies batch to batch it is simply impossible to refine your method until you make tea that is perfect for you. This maker provides the opportunity to make absolutely consistent tea, precisely the same, batch to batch.

BUT you cannot follow the directions!!! You MUST eliminate the ice and substitute water, and you MUST use the identical amount of water each time. But since it's EASIER to use water you lose absolutely nothing!!! Here are the steps;

Put water in the brewer as per the instructions. Then, rather than ice, put exactly the same amount of water in the pitcher as you just put in the brewer. What this does is assure that the liquid that comes out of the batch is the identical amount each and every time. When you use ice the first glass of tea will be "strong" and, as the ice melts, each successive glass will be weaker. This is NOT what you want. You want the tea to be exactly the same strength each and every time you tip that pitcher. I also strongly recommend using Tervis brand tumblers. They are not only US made but they will keep ice from melting for, literally, hours, preserving the correct dilution of your tea for as long as possible.

The second key is to be precise in the way you place the tea bags. Just picture what would happen if you stack three family size tea bags at the end of the brew container opposite the end that slides into the actual brewer. The hot water from the brewer will enter the brew container, and out the bottom of the container without even touching the tea!!! You will brew hot water.

I decided that, for me, I lay one Lipton family size (decaffeinated) tea bag flat under the water entry spout. I turn the plastic filter so that the blade runs parallel to the container and tapping the tea to the bottom of the bag place the mounded tea bag directly on top of the filter mesh, one to each side. The "selector" is set to dark so the water stays in the brew basket for as long as possible. And that's it.

When you make it EXACTLY the same every time you can then control the other variables, amount and type of tea, until you find what is perfect for you. I use the family size decaf iced tea bags from Lipton because I drink two batches (four quarts) per day and when I used regular caffeinated tea it was simply too much caffeine. I also have a spouted container that goes in the fridge that I use to decant the tea because I make my two batches each evening, put them in the fridge, and by morning they are both chilled perfectly.

Oh, by the way, the Mr. Coffee brewer is now a Jardin product. In my opinion Jardin is buying up reputable product names, manufacturing garbage products, and keeping prices high so they can swap out one bad product for another bad product and still be profitable. I went through three of the junky Mr. Coffee machines before landing on Hamilton Beach.
