Perfect the first time - so simple - READ BELOW March 11, 2010 K. Vonlackum (Reno, Nevada) THIS YOGURT WA SO SIMPLE AND TASTE SO FANTASTIC I HAD TO SHARE MY EXPERIENCE:
I like the thicker yogurts, and the organic variety.
I read all the reviews good and bad. I did not want to do-it-myself version.
Determined I wanted a simple unit. Something tidy for my counter top.
I wanted glass jars versus plastic.
1. Purchase this maker, opened the box, read the instructions.
2. Went to Whole Foods, purchased:
~a gallon whole organic milk
~1 lb package non fat dry milk
~ jar of bavarian style plain yogurt "with live cultures"
3. Got home:
~ poured 4 cups whole milk in a pan on setting 3 (of 9) heat.
~ stirred in the nonfat dry milk, squishing it against the side to stir all the lumps down.
~once completely lump free, the milk mixture was still LUKE warm.
~took 1/2 cup warm mixture, first stirred it into the 1.5 cups yogurt, then mixed that all back into the pan of milk mixture.
~poured the warm milk/nonfatfdrymilk/yogurt mix into the 7 jars, covered and put in maker, hit the start button, set the timer on my stove for 8.5 hours and went to sleep.
Woke up, tasted the yogurt - it was a PERFECT consistency. 8.5 hours was perfect.
Put the jars in the fridge. Now I have 6 jars of fantastic yogurt, saving the 7th jar for a starter for next batch.
THIS WAS LITERALLY SO SIMPLE. I WAS ASTOUNDED AT HOW GOOD THE YOGURT WAS.
IT WAS THICK, NOT RUNNY, AND JUST ENOUGH SOUR WITHOUT BEING TART.
The taste and texture could have something to do with using whole organic milk.
And the small glass jars are tidy, simple and makes the perfect amount.
I CAN IMAGINE THAT IF YOU FOLLOW MY SAME INSTRUCITONS ABOVE,
THAT YOU WILL BE TREATED WITH THE SAME LOVELY YOGURT EXPERIENCE I HAD.
Great Yogurt March 7, 2010 PeterOM (Minnesota) I have now made two batches (two quarts) of yogurt with the Salton Yogurt Maker. So far, the unit works great! I am not sure why other people had problems with the jars breaking. All jars with my maker were delivered unbroken. They are fairly sturdy jars, so I am not sure what caused breakage with some people. The only problem I had was that one of the tops for the jars was partially split. While this doesn't affect the yogurt being made, I will work to get this replaced. I'm now going to try making yogurt cheese to see how that tastes.
Yummy Homemade Yogurt Easy! March 6, 2010 Pamela Perry (Medford, OR) I love this little yogurt maker. I have tried making yogurt before, without the electric yogurt maker. It was a mess! I had trouble keeping the temperature right and this little gadget solved that. No watery, clumpy yogurt. Mix everything togther, put it in the jars and place them in the Salton. You wake up to fresh yogurt. Great buy!
Wonderful Small cup Yogurt Maker March 2, 2010 JADE (New York) I used to this Yogurt maker to make Bulgarian and Greek Yogurt. Both came out quite yummy. A tip to successful yogurt for this type of "heat" yogurt is to remember to heat the milk up to 160 degrees and then let cool to room temperature or 110 degrees before putting in yogurt culture. This will kill any competing bacteria from the milk. I first mixed in a quart glass jar and then into the little cups. The yogurt maker incubated the mixture to perfection in 4.5 hours and I was successful in making yogurt in my first try. Nothing more delicious than making your own homemade yogurt and I ate it with a little honey & fresh fruit.
2 jars broken in two weeks? Buy a different yogurt maker! February 22, 2010 Kitchen Gadget Fan (Enterprise, OR USA) The yogurt is indeed delicious, and the machine works quite well. The glass jars, though, aren't tempered like Pyrex, so they don't respond well to the combination of temperature changes and tight-sealing plastic lids. One jar chipped, a section about the size of my thumb, when I peeled the lid off a few mornings after I made the second batch. I thought I must have been too eager to get the thing open, or that I put pressure on it from just the wrong angle. When another split all the way to the base after the fourth batch, I realized the glass jars just aren't a good idea. Maybe another brand or model's glass jars are sturdier? I don't know, but I wouldn't recommend this model.
