Product Description No matter how much you might love your electric can opener it's not going to do a heck of a lot for you during a power outage. Every kitchen should have a sturdy manual can opener at the ready. This one is so easy to use, and comfortable, that you may decide you prefer it to your electric model after all. Additionally this opener cuts the can open from the side as opposed to from the top, keeping both the cutting blade and metal shavings out of the food within the can, as well as allowing you to replace the metal lid, should you so desire.
Amazon.com Review Sometimes the wheel needs to be reinvented, and the side-operation can opener, like this Good Grips Smooth Edge model from Oxo, is a case in point. Designed to operate on the horizontal, the opener makes a smooth cut below the can edge. The lid doesn't fall into the can, and the opener makes minimal contact with can contents. Built-in lid pliers let you grip the lid without touching it for clean and efficient removal. Though the large handles may be unwieldy for small hands, Oxo does use soft, nonslip material for a more comfortable grip. Like most standard manual openers, this unit is designed for right-handed operation. It measures 7-1/2 inches long and is safe for the dishwasher. --Emily Bedard

Great for Rheumatoid Arthritis September 6, 2010 onlineshopper My sister has rheumatoid arthritis and has great difficulty performing manual tasks with her hands. I purchased this Oxo Good Grips Smooth Edge Can Opener for her. The can opener is easy to attach to the can and the handles do not need to be squeezed closed while operating. The large knob is easy to grip and is easy to turn. No problems knowing when you've completed the trip around the circumference of the can as you can feel a let-up in the resistance. When you feel this, just do a half turn backwards. The can opener easily disengages and the lift lifts right off. If you wish, you can use the attached lid opener to help remove the lid. The edges are clean and there is nothing sharp to cut your fingers. I have a touch of carpal tunnel syndrome and have put one of these can openers on my holiday wish list. I imagine that it would also be a good tool to have for children who like to help out in the kitchen - easy and safe for little hands to use.

easy to use, I can not see where it cuts the top of a can all I do is the little pinchers on the opener an pinch the edge of the can an it lifts right off. I would give it 5 stars but it is slow opening
Love this can opener July 11, 2010 DingoT12 (South Carolina, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I received this can opener as a wedding gift. It took a few times to get used to how to put the opener on a can for use--especially if you're used to using an older, traditional can opener. Once I got used to it though, it's a gem. It removes lids cleanly and easily. Once you go all the way around, you can use the small claws on the opener to grab ahold of the lid for easy removal. Best of all, the can opener stays clean.
My old can opener ended up in the garbage.
can opener sucks July 5, 2010 D 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I haven't had this can opener not even a year. Actually, maybe six months and it's already not opening right. Even going over the can 2 or 3 times, I have to use a pair of pliers to get the top off. I had a Good Chef safety can opener and loved it. I had that one for years before it wore out. This one, it's acting like I had it as long as my old one. I miss the Good Chef one and wish I could find it. I do NOT recommend this opener. Oh, and I don't use it all the freaking time either. Maybe two or three times a week and it's acting like this? Not worth the money!
